I was born and raised in northeastern Ohio, near Canton. I began attending Akron University in 1978, as part of a 6 year BS/MD program, and graduated in 1984 from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. I then trained for 3 years in a Family Medicine Residency at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio, graduating in 1987.
While still a medical student, my high school sweetheart, Sharon, and I married in 1981, and we have had 3 children: Audrey, Jared, and Jordan. My wife has been a full time mother and homemaker, although she did find the time to go to school and become a massage therapist and homeschool our youngest child.
My first practice was in an underserved area of northern Virginia. Since that time, I have tried to serve rural and underserved communities in Ohio and Indiana, although the stark realities of financial constraints have often pushed me to other opportunities in the ever-changing landscape of medicine, insurance, and the law. In other words, either I couldn’t afford to keep the doors open, or I was down-sized. I could have chosen affluent areas in which to practice, and never would have had to move, but those areas are not where I was needed.
I am American Board of Family Medicine Certified, and will be until 2025. I engage in at least 100 hours of continuing medical education per year. I enjoy exploring new ways that old problems may be treated. I have formed working relationships with chiropractic physicians since 1991 and with acupuncturists since 2001. Wherever possible, I try to meld disciplines such as nutrition, physical therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, hypnosis, and others to medical treatments to obtain a better outcome.
