Understanding Low Testosterone

Testosterone is the predominant male sex hormone. It is most often associated with sexual performance and other male characteristics, but is also offers many physical, emotional and health benefits as well.

Testosterone levels peak during a man’s late 20s. Low testosterone is the lack of a steady flow of testosterone, or androgens. When men experience low testosterone, many other areas and systems of the body become imbalanced.

In terms of general health, normal testosterone levels help to develop lean muscle mass and regulate cholesterol and body fat. It lowers the risk for heart disease. Testosterone is important for focus, concentration and mental function.

That means when testosterone levels decrease, all these areas are influenced. Signs of aging appear such as thinning hair, aching muscles and body and wrinkling. Decreased sex drive can become erectile dysfunction.

Symptoms of Low Testosterone

As men age, their ability to produce testosterone decreases and with lower levels of testosterone, men often experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Loss of libido (sexual desire) and poor erections (erectile dysfunction) – Erectile Dysfunction is a medical condition, often referred to as impotence when the male is unable to maintain an erection during sexual intercourse. Often the condition is the result of too little testosterone. Increased levels of testosterone can increase libido and reduce erectile dysfunction. HRT and BHRT are both treatments that have been effective for returning men to the levels and performance in their younger years.
  • Depression, mood swings and irritability – Hormone imbalance in humans of both genders can result in mood swings and irritability. Treating the symptoms with anti-depressants does not address the cause. Hormone replacement therapy and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can level out the hormonal imbalance and alleviate moodiness and irritability.
  • Inability to focus, concentrate and remember – These are all symptoms of “mental fogginess.” Men with hormone deficiencies sleep less and less soundly and quality sleep is important for cognitive function. If the root deficiency (low testosterone) is not treated, the symptoms continue and gradually worsen.   • Reduced energy – The gradual decline of sex hormones, especially testosterone, contributes to many factors leading up to energy loss. Recognizing the connection between low testosterone levels and aging is the key to restoring vitality.
  • Weight gain, a decrease in body mass and strength, and an increase in body fat – Diminished muscle tone and weight gain go hand-in-hand. After age 35, due to aging and lower levels of hormones, males experience a reduction in muscle mass and a higher percentage of body fat and that affects both weight and strength. Men also find recovery from exercise takes longer. HRT and BHRT can help turn back the hands of time; allowing men to retain of improve their physicality and stamina.
  • Osteoporosis – Often called a “silent disease,” bone density loss has been found to be connected with a declining level of sex hormones, such as testosterone. Studies show that by their 40s, men and women are losing bone density at a rate of 0.5% per year. Replacing hormones through HRT or BHRT can help slow bone loss and, in some cases, partially reverse it.
  • Lowered sperm count and fertility

Outward signs of low testosterone include:

  • A decrease in body mass and strength due to a loss in muscle tissue
  • A loss of body hair
  • Breast enlargement
  • Testes may become smaller and softer
